about

VOC TRANSIT: For years, Dean De Benedictis, aka Surface 10, has strived to challenge the conventional side of even music that is considered cutting edge. He tries to think a few steps ahead of any current steps, to him being personally worth the arduous task, whether or not the public considers him successful at it. On the track entitled "VOC Transit," Dean implements a technique he rolled around in his mind for almost 15 years before trying out; he created drum sounds that have reverberations of sung notes in them (sung by humans), and then chopped them up to create strange/alternative beats that play in the key of the song. Just about every drum sound heard in the beat of this song, is ringing out a sung note that is also in the key of the overall musical arrangement. In these rhythms he also includes consonants from some of the whispers he's been chopping into beats, to add dynamic variety. These whispered consonants are the only drum instruments that don't sound out a sung note in the key of the song. Over those rhythms, Dean then adds additional instrumentation: synth parts, acoustic instrument samples, etc.. The song also crescendos up from a floating long intro, a method Dean is notorious for practicing, and for which he also sacrifices some of his potential EDM audience.
